Introduction to Federal Government Contracting

The Consortium for Execution of Rendezvous and Servicing Operations (CONFERS) – the independent global trade association fostering the satellite servicing industry – hosted a webinar entitled Introduction to Federal Government Contracting, presented by Daniel Cook, Partner, DLA Piper (US), LLP, on Thursday, February 15, 2024 at 1400 ET/2000 CET/0400 JST (Friday, February 16, 2024).

Every year, the U.S. Government spends tens of billions of dollars on space-related activities.  This creates significant opportunities for companies in the space sector, including satellite operators and launch service providers.  At the same time, however, navigating the complex federal procurement landscape can be challenging for both newcomers and seasoned government contractors alike.  With these considerations in mind, this presentation will cover the basics of federal government contracting, including the solicitation and bidding process, contract pricing, bid protests, and contract disputes.  Throughout this discussion, we will focus on the rules and requirements of the Federal Acquisition Regulation (“FAR”) and best practices for ensuring compliance and limiting legal risk.  We will also touch on a number of key topics of particular relevance to companies in the space sector, including protection of intellectual property, Other Transactions Agreements (“OTAs”), cybersecurity compliance, and supply chain compliance.

“State of the Association” Webinar

The Consortium for Execution of Rendezvous and Servicing Operations (CONFERS) – the independent global trade association fostering the satellite servicing industry – held its second industry-wide informational “State of the Association” webinar on Monday, December 11, 2023, at 1300 Pacific/1600 EDT/2200 CEST/0600 JST (Tuesday, December 12).

With CONFERS one year on from its transition from DARPA to a stand-alone global trade association, this briefing provided an excellent opportunity for the entire industry – especially those unable to attend CONFERS 6th Annual Global Satellite Servicing Forum in October – to learn about CONFERS’ activities since the first “State of the Association” webinar in May, and what’s in store for 2024 and beyond.  Attendees also had the opportunity to see the many member companies currently engaged with CONFERS, and learn how their companies, too, can become an integral part of CONFERS.
